Faktor Verlag is a Swiss publisher focusing on energy, technology, architecture and sustainability. Its reference books and periodicals have a reputation in the industry for their high quality and thorough research.
Brief
With the reference book Areale und Quartiere – nachhaltig entwickeln und betreiben (English: Urban Sites and Districts – Sustainable Development and Operation), Faktor Verlag has published a practical guide for the construction and real estate industry. In addition to basic knowledge about urban sites and districts, the book also covers specialist topics and concepts including social and economic aspects, processes, energy, resources, mobility, climate adaptations, biodiversity, and labels and standards.
In order to make the book accessible to the French-speaking Swiss population, the publisher required a precise, specialised translation. The project was challenging:
- Complex specialist terminology: The translation had to be precise in terms of language and content while also remaining readable.
- Formats: The translations needed to be done directly from Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. The customer wanted to retain the layout from the German version to the greatest extent possible and also keep graphic work to a minimum.
- Collaborative editing process with a feedback loop: The text needed to be translated in stages by a specialised translator directly in the layout and checked for technical accuracy.
Solution
Translingua relied on a combination of linguistic expertise and technological know-how to meet these challenges:
- Experienced specialist translators: The text was translated by specialist translators with profound knowledge in the fields of construction and sustainability.
- Direct processing in the original format: Processing in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and InCopy allowed for seamless integration into the existing publication processes, thus reducing production costs.
- Thorough specialist revision: The translations were reviewed and selectively optimised by Francine Wegmüller, an expert in the field. All modifications were carried out using track changes and finalised in close coordination with the specialist translator.
The result: A high degree of linguistic precision, consistent specialist terminology and seamless integration into the production workflow.
Christine Sidler from Faktor Verlag said this about the project: “Translingua promised that the translation quality would be high from the beginning and would only increase after the first feedback rounds. They kept this promise.”
With the precise, practically orientated translation of the book, French-speaking specialists in Switzerland now have access to essential knowledge about sustainable urban district development. This makes it easier for them to develop residential areas with a high quality of life in a climate-friendly way.
